Preface - VOID|Presence of node

Makoto OFUNE

Kamigamo shrine and Shimogamo shrine are the oldest shrines in Kyoto, and these shrines have been passed down as sacred places far before a structure called Shaden was built. In Japanese mythology, there can be found a bond between these two shrines. The fire on an arrow that was scooped up from a river gave birth to a new life, then it connected Shimogamo to Kamigamo. "Tate-zuna" sand mounds at Kamigamo shrine is said to be made to model Mt. Kou-yama (kanji characters "神山" represent god/mountain), which is located 2km north of the shrine. It is also said that there once was an advent of the enshrined deity of Kamigamo shrine.
Closely connected to the landscape, stream of rivers, and climate of Kyoto and as if tracing back the stream, there exists an infinite chain that goes on, toward and beyond the sky. While people's gathering and wishes overlap with each other, there is generated a huge circulation of diversity.
Each artwork at each shrine would resonate with the place, and present a form of call-and-response. The sharply and heightened physical expression firmly attracts the internal/external worlds, and breathes in the movement. When everything overlaps, the expansion further reaches to everyone who shares the experience on the site.

One-night exhibition and performance project by Makoto Ofune (painter) and Kaiji  Moriyama (contemporary dancer). This program is related to the once-in-21-year festival of the Kamigamo and Shimogamo shrines, called Shikinen Sengu. In the sacred dusk, experience with your all senses.
